In the beginning.......
Axstane Players formed in 1967 following a very successful WI pantomime.
In 1966, members of Farningham WI persuaded their husbands, boyfriends and children to take part in their pantomime, Cinderella. Performed in January 1967, the production was such a success that a small group of people then decided that a drama group should be formed. The first production was an Old Tyme Music Hall in the autumn of 1967.
During the first few months, many suggestions for names were put forward but eventually the name 'Axstane Players' was chosen. The name dates back to Saxon times when the country was separated into land areas called "Hundreds". The "Hundred" that included Farningham was called 'Axstane'. This name immediately caught on for its originality and so we were christened.
What We Actually Do
During a year, we usually perform three productions. A pantomime and two plays or a musical production. After 42 years we have clocked up an amazing 119 productions.
When in production we rehearse two nights of the week and construct our stage sets on Sunday mornings. As if we didn't spend enough time together, our group is also very sociable. Our Social Secretary regulary organises trips to see shows, an annual quiz night and a Christmas Dinner and Dance.
Socially for 2009, we will be holding a Quiz Night on April 3rd and are planning to see various professional and amateur dramatic productions in the area.
